With a fully discrete signal path, Custom Sowter audio transformers, a tube output stage and two newly added blend controls, we are happy to declare the Stam SA-76A+ not only the most accurate replica of the vintage UREI 1176 Revision A in the market, but also the most exciting and versatile one.
Handmade one by one at our lab in Chile by our small team of engineers, we pride ourselves in delivering the most authentic and accurate reproduction made today of this beloved compressor while incorporating several modern features, while keeping it affordable for our users.
With so many manufacturers recreating this classic unit, we decided to step up our game and offer a truly unique 1176 without sacrificing the classic tone and operation of the original unit. We did this by adding a second tube output stage, which turns this 1176 into a tube 1176, taking this classic compressor to a whole new level.
Tube Output Stage
Unlike any other replica currently made, the Stam SA-76A+ has a built-in and selectable tube output circuit option, which can be added into the circuit with a blend control potentiometer. The tube output stage includes a ECC88 valve and a Carnhill output transformer that takes this classic compressor to a whole new level, with a bigger low end and rich top end harmonic content. With the dual output stage now being fully variable, Stam SA-76A+ users can now decide how much of each output section is present in the signal, giving you an array of colours to choose from and essentially 3 compressors in 1. The classic 1176 Rev A, the tube 1176 Rev A and a 50% hybrid between both.
New Features
The Stam SA-76A+ also comes with a unity gain calibrated dry-wet blend control and the same super slow attack mod found on the SA-76 ADG, which is ideal for recording and mixing kicks and bass guitars.
Audio Transformers and Capacitors
Audio transformers are the single most important part in reproducing a vintage unit’s unique timbre, tone and frequency response. At the Stam Audio Lab we have auditioned every single one of them and we can confidently say that the SA-76D+ features a Sowter 1260 input transformer, which is an identical replica of the original UTC O-12 (Ratio 1:1.58 200/500 Ohms) and a custom Sowter output transformer that precisely match the ratio and frequency response of the original 5002 found on Rev A and D.
We have made no compromise in parts such as Vishay capacitors, quality resistors and matched, selected transistors to ensure you will get the best sounding unit without cutting any corners. All Stam SA-76A+ units are hand-made and calibrated in our workshop in Chile, where they get a full quality check and 48-hour burn.
