The Stam SA-76+ combines four iconic 1176 revisions in one unit with premium components and seamless switching. Featuring Sowter transformers and Tube Blend control, it offers authentic tone, versatility, and exceptional quality.

Stam SA-76+ FET Compressor Details

Do you love the aggressive mid-range and coloration of the 1176 Blue Face, the subtle character and versatility of Revision D on vocals and bass, and the gentle, transparent qualities of Revisions F and G on acoustic guitars and stringed instruments? If so, the Stam SA-76+ is the perfect compressor for you.

As we planned to create 1176 models of each famous revision, we thought: why make just one when we could deliver all four versions to our clients at the same price as a single unit? Mechanically and component-wise, the cost was only marginally higher, allowing us to use both the O-12 and 5002 transformers for the A and D sections as in the original units, while bypassing the transformer for Revision G to match its original design.

We faced two key challenges. First, each revision had to sound 100% identical to the original, respecting the original signal path and schematic. Second, it had to retain the iconic look of the 1176. To achieve this, we removed the +4 and +10 metering options, leaving the VU meter in standard Gain Reduction mode. This allowed us to use the original switches to select between revisions. With the aid of several relays, we ensured seamless switching between versions while preserving their authentic sound.

Each Stam SA-76+ unit features a Sowter input transformer (an O-12 replica), a Sowter 1327 output transformer, Carnhill transformers, Philip capacitors, Ohmite carbon comp resistors, tantalum capacitors, and the correct output transistors. To further enhance functionality, we added a Tube Blend control to each revision, making this compressor an 8-in-1 JFET unit.

From a commercial perspective, releasing each revision separately might have been more profitable, allowing us to sell more units. However, at Stam Audio, we prioritise giving our customers the best value for their money and optimising their rack space. Combining all four revisions into one unit reflects our commitment to this philosophy.

The Stam SA-76+ is built with premium components and meticulous attention to detail to faithfully reproduce the compression characteristics and tonal qualities of the original 1176. It features a Sowter 1260 input transformer, an identical replica of the UTC O-12, with a 1:1.58 ratio (200/500 Ohms), and a Sowter 1327 output transformer, precisely matching the ratio and frequency response of the original 5002 transformer designed by Bill Putnam. With no compromises on parts like Vishay capacitors, Ohmite resistors, and matched transistors, we ensure every unit delivers exceptional sound quality without cutting corners.

Each Stam SA-76+ is hand-assembled and calibrated in our workshop in Chile. Transformers are soldered, and every unit undergoes a full health check and a rigorous 48-hour burn-in process. This ensures that every Stam SA-76+ meets the highest standards of quality and performance, giving you an authentic, versatile compressor that embodies the legacy of the 1176.
