The Stam SA-1B is a painstakingly reverse-engineered replica of the iconic Danish 1B opto compressor. Long requested and with numerous attempts by others to recreate it, we felt it was time to bring an accurate and affordable version of this classic to the market.
Through precise component selection and a proprietary matching circuit, the Stam SA-1B faithfully reproduces the original’s frequency response, tone, top-end character, and time constants.
At Stam Audio, we prioritise sound above all else. Hundreds of hours were spent evaluating every component’s impact on the circuit to ensure the Stam SA-1B captures the silky top-end and “grab” that define the vintage 1B. While renowned for its transparency, the 1B design subtly imparts unique colour and character through its transformers, tubes, and opto element, resulting in articulate, smooth compression.
Recreating the original tone required precise transformers. After testing multiple prototypes, we opted for two bespoke designs: a custom input transformer made in the USA and a Swedish Lundahl output transformer. These match the original’s ratios, frequency response, and THD.
The opto element was the most challenging component to perfect. After extensive tests, we commissioned a custom-designed opto element specifically for the Stam SA-1B. A proprietary circuit ensures identical attack and release times to the vintage 1B.
Several modern enhancements improve functionality without compromising the original’s sound: a dry/wet blend control, a 5-position side-chain high-pass filter, a bypass switch, and a stereo link switch.
Each Stam SA-1B is meticulously hand-assembled by our dedicated team in Chile. Every transformer, tube, opto element, and capacitor is individually tested to ensure every unit performs consistently and at the highest standard.
