The SPL P8 is a high-performance eight-channel microphone preamplifier designed for professional multi-channel recording. Each of its eight preamps features a fully discrete circuit, employing individual transistors instead of integrated circuits – an approach synonymous with premium preamplifier design that ensures exceptional audio fidelity.
Gain control is managed via an analogue knob, offering adjustment from +8 dB to +62 dB, catering to a wide range of microphone sensitivities. Each channel includes individually switchable 48V phantom power for condenser microphones, a 20 dB PAD switch for handling high-level signals from sources such as percussion or brass instruments, a phase inversion function for polarity correction, and a selectable high-pass filter that attenuates frequencies below 80 Hz to eliminate subsonic noise.
For input, the SPL P8 is equipped with Neutrik XLR microphone connectors featuring gold-plated contacts, ensuring stable and balanced signal transmission at a nominal level of 0 dBu. The output section consists of two DB25 connectors, delivering analogue line-level signals from all eight preamps for seamless integration with multi-channel AD converters or parallel recording setups, eliminating the need for external splitters.
An optional eight-channel AD converter with ADAT outputs is available for those requiring digital connectivity. This module utilises the AKM AK5538 ADC chip, supporting sampling rates up to 192 kHz to maintain the highest possible signal integrity in the digital domain. The converter features dual optical ADAT outputs (TOSLINK) for compatibility with a wide range of audio interfaces, along with word clock input and output connections, complete with a termination switch for precise synchronisation in complex digital studio configurations.
The SPL P8’s construction reflects SPL’s commitment to quality, featuring a 4 mm thick black anodised aluminium front panel, solid aluminium knobs, and a sturdy steel chassis with a black powder-coated finish, ensuring durability and a refined studio aesthetic.
