The Revox B77 is a renowned ¼-inch reel-to-reel tape recorder introduced by the Swiss company Revox in 1977 as the successor to the A77 and A700. Designed for both professional and high-fidelity home audio applications, it became a benchmark in analogue recording.
The Revox B77 features a robust three-motor drive system, comprising two AC winding motors and an electronically controlled capstan motor, providing precise tape handling and consistent speed stability. It accommodates reels up to 10.5 inches in diameter, and its durable die-cast chassis and components ensure long-term reliability.
The machine uses three heads: Erase, record, and playback, allowing real-time monitoring during recording. These heads are made from Revodur, a durable alloy chosen for its magnetic properties and wear resistance. The Revox B77 delivers a frequency response of 30 Hz to 20 kHz ±2 dB at 19 cm/s, offering high-fidelity audio reproduction.
Two main versions of the Revox B77 were produced: the MKI from 1977 to 1980 and the Revox B77 MKII from 1980 to 1998, which introduced vari-speed control and improved electronics. It was available in multiple configurations to suit different needs, including standard models with 9.5/19 cm/s speeds, high-speed versions with 19/38 cm/s, low-speed variants at 4.75/9.5 cm/s, and even super low speed options at 2.38/4.75 cm/s for monitoring applications.
A model with integrated Dolby B noise reduction was also available, achieving noise levels better than 74 dB in half-track mode at 19 cm/s. The Revox B77 also included a built-in splicing block and non-magnetic cutter on the front panel for manual tape editing, along with an editor switch to monitor playback during winding.
Its combination of sound quality, tape handling precision, and flexible design made the Revox B77 a trusted choice for professionals and enthusiasts alike. Its reputation endures to this day as one of the most iconic analogue tape recorders ever built.
