Used wisely, I’d say it’s even possible to finish a track on it, like a mix bus. In general, its use in Mid / Side on the battery bus and sending a kick signal sidechain to make room in a dense bass generally gives a very satisfactory result. In voices, guitars and P.A systems there are dozens of other possibilities that will bring a faster and better result. It is worthwhile if the intention is to buy a first VCA compressor for those who want to start in the analog world by spending no more than what a new shirt costs.

A really cool Digital effects Processor. You can’t edit the presets but most of the one’s inside the unit are pretty great if you like Lo-Fi sounding effects. Got mine for about $50, I don’t know if they’re still that cheap anymore. The delay sections isn’t the best, they’re all 1 tap. The effects to get inside the Midiverb II are the Bloom reverbs, Regen delays, and the Chorus in them are pretty nice. Of all the Midiverbs, this is the best one in my opinion.

GREAT FOR SYNTHS

I bought this because of the sound character and easy to use interface. No edit means you concentrate more in music than tweaking (I already have other FX units with lots of control). Just choose a preset, browse variations and use the one you like the most. Easy, fun and very musical results. Sound character over perfection is the key here. For synths is what you need when your hi-end stuff lacks a little extra juice. Also the presets are very inspirational, so for jamming and find stuff is even better than a lot of other most complex units in my studio.

X-FILES REVERB

Not so good construction. It’s physically cheap in every regard and noisy hence the prices it commands now. But for cost of a dinner out here’s what you get. A collection of usable and well rounded presets that are still useful for modern electronic music. And the best part is the mojo factor. Very chewy lofi sound that reminds me of the X-Files theme as heard from VHS on old CRT televisions. Or Twin Peaks even.

Yesterday’s cheese is today’s gourmet. I love this box on older VA synths like the Alesis Ion. And on digital synths in general because you can overdrive the inputs anywhere from mild warmth to wild grit. Underrated little machine that has tricks up its sleeve after all these years.

Hated this thing when I bought it new back in the late 80’s cause I thought I could edit the presets – my goof – so it sat unused until I pulled it out a few years later to use on a track and realized how great it was. Been using it on everything ever since AND even bought a 2nd one off EBay or Craigs a few years back for like $50. It’s a classic!

GRAINY GOODNESS

Build quality: The buttons are nice. Its intuitive and fast to program. Its only like 6 inches deep, so with cables plugged in back that’s about 9 inches deep. Sound quality: Its grainy and noisy. Has unbalanced connections. Usefulness: Unique character that’s not easily replicated in-the-box. Mojo: I like to use Quadraverb for its great huge reverb decay because it makes block chords or strings sound beautiful, beefy, and full of grainy character. Reliability: The front panel and screen work great and interface is responsive and easy to navigate. But I probably have a bad unit because sometimes, especially when its first powered on and still cold, the right channel dips by like 14dB so i give the unit a little shake and wiggle the cables in the back to get it working correctly.

Had the unit in our electro studio, was great on all the drum reverbs. To my ears very 1980’s sounding, our unit required a new display.
