GREAT REVERB BUT VERY FRAGILE

This is a killer reverb and nothing else really sounds like it which is why it is still sought after, but be very careful buying one and having it shipped. This is not a really well built unit and with so many internal boards, one heavy drop and it will fall to bits, mine did! Get one for it’s great sound, but collect it, do not ship it.

This is a studio legend that is still in use the world over and for good reason, there is no other reverb that sounds like it. Internally it is a complex beast and does not stand up to being roughly handled during freight so be careful when buying one. Pick it up if you can.

Have it in the studio right now. Same core as the Alesis Wedge, which I owned prior to this unit. You get a lot for the budget. Mine seems to be an early unit with no MIDI Clock recognition. I’d recommend to aim for a Wedge as a desktop version. Issue I have with the Rack version is that the display, hence it shines bright, is not readable from any angle.

This thing is excellent if used sparingly. It does wonders for drum machines.

Not bad. But not impressed so much. Plastic halls, unproved delays, and suddenly good choruses.

TRACKING COMPRESSOR

I give it very positive remarks as it is a lively sound. It does well with dynamics and adds umph to my tracks. There are plenty of variables such as peak VS rms and does well as a brick wall limiter as it has infinite as a ratio setting. All of that being said does not hide the fact that it can be difficult to dial in but once it is dialed it the job gets done. Another thing is that if you like Grace or GML equipment you probably won’t like this as it has a definite attitude that can be characterized as aggressive which is usually described as coloring the sound. But that didn’t stop EMI Studios from using equipment that was coloring the sound as all you do is incorporate it into your mix. Ultimately the biggest turnoff anyone may have is that it can be difficult to dial in but once dialed in the results can be great.

Used wisely, I’d say it’s even possible to finish a track on it, like a mix bus. In general, its use in Mid / Side on the battery bus and sending a kick signal sidechain to make room in a dense bass generally gives a very satisfactory result. In voices, guitars and P.A systems there are dozens of other possibilities that will bring a faster and better result. It is worthwhile if the intention is to buy a first VCA compressor for those who want to start in the analog world by spending no more than what a new shirt costs.

REALLY COOL CHEAP EFFECTS PROCESSOR

A really cool Digital effects Processor. You can’t edit the presets but most of the one’s inside the unit are pretty great if you like Lo-Fi sounding effects. Got mine for about $50, I don’t know if they’re still that cheap anymore. The delay sections isn’t the best, they’re all 1 tap. The effects to get inside the Midiverb II are the Bloom reverbs, Regen delays, and the Chorus in them are pretty nice. Of all the Midiverbs, this is the best one in my opinion.

GREAT FOR SYNTHS

I bought this because of the sound character and easy to use interface. No edit means you concentrate more in music than tweaking (I already have other FX units with lots of control). Just choose a preset, browse variations and use the one you like the most. Easy, fun and very musical results. Sound character over perfection is the key here. For synths is what you need when your hi-end stuff lacks a little extra juice. Also the presets are very inspirational, so for jamming and find stuff is even better than a lot of other most complex units in my studio.
