When Roland released their Boss Micro Studio Series Effects back in 1985, it was just what home recording studios needed; Decent quality effects that were affordable and compact. Not everyone could afford Lexicon reverbs or even Yamaha multi-effect such as the SPX90, so these effects were just the ticket.
