MXR Auto Phaser

MXR Auto Phaser

The MXR Auto Phaser is a professional phasing unit with low distortion, minimal noise, and a wide range of effects. It features easy operation, low power consumption, and a broad supply range, making it suitable for studio, portable mixing, and PA applications. Unlike flanging, its phase-shift response creates non-harmonic notches in the audio spectrum.

MXR Auto Phaser Details

The MXR Auto Phaser is a high-quality phasing unit designed for professional use, offering low distortion, minimal noise, and a versatile range of effects to accommodate all studio phasing requirements. With straightforward operation, low power consumption, and a broad supply range, the MXR Auto Phaser is well-suited for portable mixing or PA applications.

The audible effect of phasing is created by a phase-shifted response that produces a series of notches in the audio spectrum. While similar to reel flanging, these notches differ as they are not harmonically related. A phaser is an effects unit that generates a phase-shifted response by applying a comb-filter effect with frequency-related notches, which are then blended back with the original signal.

Phasing occurs by processing the input signal through a series of all-pass filters, each introducing a variable phase shift. When the processed signal is combined with the original, certain frequencies cancel while others are reinforced, creating a sweeping comb-filter effect across a broad frequency range. As these notches shift through the spectrum, the result is a spacious, swirling sound.

Phasing is most effective in the mid and low-frequency ranges, distinguishing it from flanging, which came later in audio processing.

The MXR Professional Products Rack is a compact, self-contained enclosure designed for mounting, powering, and interfacing up to four MXR Auto Flangers or MXR Auto Phasers in any configuration. Its specialised power supply ensures operation across a wide range of line voltages.

Built with durability in mind, the Professional Products Rack supports standard half-rack mounting but can also be used freestanding for studio effects on location. Its flexible control system allows for independent operation of each unit or synchronised operation in various master-slave configurations. Strategically grouped phone jacks enable patching of units individually or in series, providing extensive creative possibilities.

MXR also produced a standard 19″ rack capable of housing four MXR Auto Phaser, MXR Auto Flanger’s, or a combination of both.
