The MOTU 828 Audio Interface is a 28 x 32 USB3 audio interface for Mac, Windows and iOS with mixing and effects built in, and more importantly it can use all 60 inouts and outputs simultaneaously unlike many of it rivals, not to mention it sounds superb.

MOTU 828 Audio Interface Details

The MOTU 828 is a next-generation 28 x 32 USB3 audio interface designed for Mac, Windows, and iOS platforms, offering advanced mixing capabilities and high-quality effects processing. Building upon over two decades of industry-leading audio interface innovation, the MOTU 828 delivers exceptional analogue audio performance, driven by renowned ESS Sabre32™ DAC technology, achieving a remarkable 125 dB dynamic range and extremely low harmonic distortion.

Equipped with a 5 Gbps USB 3 connection (backward compatible with USB 2), the MOTU 828 ensures seamless integration with Mac, PC, or iOS devices. Its class-compliant firmware allows for plug-and-play functionality without the need for additional drivers. Industry-standard high-performance drivers ensure compatibility with all major audio applications. It also connects directly to an iPad™ via USB-C or a standard camera connection kit (Lightning adapter).

The MOTU 828 provides 60 simultaneous audio channels – 28 inputs and 32 outputs – including:

  • Two combo XLR/TRS mic/line/hi-Z guitar inputs with individual preamp gain, 48V phantom power, -20 dB pad, and phase invert.
  • Eight balanced TRS analogue line-level inputs and outputs.
  • Separate main outputs on XLR jacks.
  • Two banks of 8-channel optical I/O.
  • Stereo RCA S/PDIF digital I/O.
  • Two front-panel headphone outputs with independent volume control.

This extensive connectivity allows for seamless integration of microphones, guitars, synthesizers, keyboards, drum machines, outboard processors, MIDI gear, and optical expanders.

Optimised drivers for both Mac and PC deliver renowned ultra-low latency performance. With a high-performance DAW such as Digital Performer, the MOTU 828 achieves an astonishing round-trip latency (RTL) of approximately 2 milliseconds over USB (2 or 3) at 96 kHz with a 32-sample host buffer.

The MOTU 828’s mic channels feature cutting-edge components that deliver ultra-transparent sound with -114 dB THD+N, 118 dB dynamic range, and -129 dBu EIN. Each mic channel provides individual controls for up to 74 dB of preamp gain, a -20 dB pad, 48V phantom power, and phase inversion. All settings can be controlled remotely from a computer or iOS device. Each mic channel includes a dedicated send/return insert for outboard gear processing.

The MOTU 828 features a flexible 24-input digital mixer with eight stereo buses and DSP effects, including reverb, 4-band EQ, gate, and compression. This allows for comprehensive mixing and processing capabilities directly within the interface.

If the MOTU 828 is connected to a computer on a Wi-Fi network, all settings can be controlled wirelessly from the CueMix 5 app running on mobile devices or other computers on the same network – even multiple devices simultaneously. Network discovery and password protection features provide secure access.

From studio recording to live performance, the MOTU 828 delivers exceptional sound quality, state-of-the-art operation, and rock-solid performance, making it an ideal choice for professionals and enthusiasts alike.
