MOTU 24I/O

MOTU 24I/O Audio Interface

The MOTU 24I/O interface fulfills the promise of host-based hard disk recording: to record, edit, mix process, and master multitrack recording projects entirely inside the computer. It provides 24 high quality, 24-bit/96kHz analog inputs and outputs in a cost effective, single rack space package, allowing you to connect and record from 24 simultaneous analog sources.

MOTU 24I/O Audio Interface Details

The MOTU 24I/O was a landmark release that brought true multitrack analogue integration to host-based hard disk recording systems. Designed to operate entirely within the computer, it offered 24 high-quality, 24-bit/96kHz analogue inputs and outputs in a single rack unit—allowing seamless connection to a full suite of external gear without the need for external mixers or converters. Whether used to track a large ensemble or to permanently integrate multiple synths and processors, the 24I/O delivered a comprehensive and cost-effective solution for modern DAW setups.

Available either as a core system, including the PCI-424 card and AudioDesk software, or as an expansion for existing MOTU PCI-424-based setups, the MOTU 24I/O used the same connectivity standard as the acclaimed MOTU 2408 Mk3. Up to four interfaces could be connected to a single PCI-424, enabling massive systems with up to 96 channels of simultaneous I/O.

As a companion to the MOTU 2408mk3, the 24I/O was an ideal way to expand a MOTU system with 24 channels of dedicated analogue I/O. This made it possible to keep every piece of studio hardware permanently connected, streamlining workflow and eliminating patching downtime. All routing and monitoring could be easily controlled through the PCI-424 Console software.

At the heart of the system was CueMix DSP™, MOTU’s hardware-based digital mixing environment built into the PCI-424 card. Offering zero-latency monitoring of up to 96 channels of 96kHz audio, it eliminated the need to monitor through the DAW and freed up valuable CPU resources. Unlike earlier CueMix versions, CueMix DSP allowed users to create multiple independent mixes, each with its own pan and level control, and assign them to any physical output. In large systems, this meant up to 48 unique stereo mixes could be created, ideal for complex studio setups or cue mixes for performers.

Crucially, any Audiowire interface, including the original 2408, could take full advantage of CueMix DSP’s advanced functionality, allowing legacy users to modernise their workflows without discarding earlier MOTU hardware. The MOTU 24I/O represented a significant step forward in modular DAW integration, offering studio-grade sound quality and near-infinite routing flexibility in a compact form factor.

Features

  • Expandable – connect up to four 24I/O units to a PCI-424 audio card for a total of 96 inputs and outputs. Use as many simultaneous channels as host software and computer allow.
  • 100% compatible with all MOTU AudioWire interfaces. Mix and match MOTU audio interfaces (up to four at once) to meet your exact I/O needs.
  • Drivers for Mac OS X and Windows – provides multi-channel 24-bit I/O for all leading audio software on both computer platforms.
  • Word clock – resolves to time code or any other external time base via MOTU’s Digital Timepiece synchronizer or any other standard digital audio synchronization device.
  • Resolves directly to SMPTE time code (LTC) with fast lock-up and sub-frame accuracy.
