Harrison 32Classic MS Mix Strip

The Harrison 32Classic MS Mix Strip is a 500-series processor that brings legendary Harrison 32 console EQ tone and mid/side processing to modern mastering and mixing applications.

Harrison 32Classic MS Mix Strip Details

The Harrison 32Classic MS is a 1U 19” analogue channel strip that incorporates the renowned 32Classic mic preamp with transformer input, front-panel microphone and Hi-Z instrument inputs, a balanced insert point, and Harrison’s iconic 32C four-band EQ with both high-pass and low-pass filters. It also features a dedicated output level control with a fixed 0dB switchable setting.

Designed for both standalone and expandable use, the Harrison 32Classic MS includes a mix bus routing section that allows the processed signal to feed a stereo mix bus with pan control. This balanced mix bus can be daisy-chained across multiple Harrison 32Classic MS units using rear panel summing connectors.

One of the connected units can be designated as the master using the included jumper cable, enabling its mix section to serve as the master summing and output control point. This modular approach allows users to build a fully functional analogue mixing system, one channel strip at a time, within a standard 19” rack format.

The input section of each Harrison 32Classic MS features the same transformer-coupled microphone preamp found in Harrison’s 32Classic large-format console. It includes switchable +48V phantom power, a fixed -20dB pad, and polarity reversal. Microphone signals can be fed into the unit via the rear-panel XLR or the front-panel combo XLR input, selectable using the ‘FRONT MIC’ switch.

Instrument signals are connected to the Harrison 32Classic MS through the front-panel ¼” Hi-Z input, activated via the ‘FRONT HiZ’ switch. If both MIC and HiZ inputs are selected, the HiZ input takes priority. A line-level input is also available via the rear-panel XLR, with its own activation switch and ±6dB trim control. Additionally, an insert point is positioned after the input stage and before the EQ, accessible via rear-panel XLRs and engaged using the front-panel ‘INS’ switch. A bi-colour signal LED provides visual metering of the input level.

The EQ section replicates the four-band parametric equaliser found in the Harrison 32Classic console, directly descended from the 1975 Harrison 32 Series design. Frequency bands include LO (40–600Hz), MID1 (200Hz–3.1kHz), MID2 (400Hz–6kHz), and HI (900Hz–13kHz), each with ±10dB of boost or cut and proportional-Q response.

The LO and HI bands default to shelving mode but can be switched to bell response using dedicated switches. The EQ also includes Harrison’s signature high-pass and low-pass filters, offering exceptionally broad frequency ranges: HPF (25Hz–3.15kHz) and LPF (160Hz–20kHz). Independent in/out switches are provided for both the filters and the EQ.

The routing section provides output level control, stereo mix bus routing, and pan functionality. When used as a standalone unit, only the output fader and 0dB switch are active. In expanded systems using multiple Harrison 32Classic MS units, the pan and routing controls come into play, enabling channel-by-channel positioning within the stereo mix bus and integration into a larger summing network.
