Pultec

Pultec is a professional audio equipment company that has been producing some of the most revered studio equipment for more than 60 years. The company was founded in 1951 by Eugene Shenk, a pioneer in audio engineering, who developed the company’s first product, the Pultec EQP-1 equaliser. The EQP-1 was the world’s first equaliser to use passive filters, and it quickly became a favourite among engineers and producers due to its ability to add warmth and character to recordings. The EQP-1A (a later version with gain stage) has since become a staple in recording studios around the world and is considered one of the most important pieces of audio equipment ever created. Over the years, Pultec continued to innovate and produce new and improved versions of its equalisers, including the MEQ-5 and the EQH-2. These products expanded on the company’s legacy of creating warm and characterful equalisers and helped to cement Pultec’s reputation as one of the world’s leading manufacturers of high-quality audio equipment.

Released in 1951
First introduced in 1951, the Pultec EQP-1 Program Equaliser was the first passive equaliser on the market. Upon its introduction, it changed the recording world forever, offering a new way to manipulate sound. The fact that Pultec equalisers in one form or another are still in use today, is extraordinary.
Released in 1955
The Pultec MEQ-5 provides fine control over the “power region” (300 Hz to 5000 Hz), where most audio energy is focused and the ear is highly sensitive. Smooth handling of this range is crucial, as minor acoustic or equipment resonances can greatly affect sound clarity and listenability.
Released in 1961
The Pultec EQP-1A is a classic equaliser known for its warm, smooth sound, achieved through a unique design that allows simultaneous frequency boosting and cutting. Introduced in 1961, its tube-driven, passive circuitry adds depth and clarity, making it a favourite for enhancing bass and airy highs. Its “Pultec sound” remains a staple in studios for its natural, musical character.
