dbx 163X Compressor Limiter

The dbx 163X Compressor/Limiter provides smooth, natural-sounding OverEasy® compression with easy, hands-on control, versatile inputs for recording and live use, and features like stereo-strapping for balanced stereo compression, making it ideal for enhancing instrument and vocal levels while preventing PA overload.

dbx 163X Compressor Limiter Details

The dbx 163X Compressor/Limiter was part of dbx’s Performer Series of half rack audio processors, along with the dbx 263X De-Esser and the dbx 463X Noise Gate Expander, all of which could be racked in pairs with an optional adapter.

The dbx 163X’s effectiveness lies in its smooth and natural-sounding OverEasy® compression. With a single slider equipped with LEDs for instant visual feedback, the dbx 163X allows for easy, hands-on control. You can adjust the sound by ear; simply move the slider to the right for increased compression. The one-finger adjustable level control sets the overall operating level, ensuring the dbx 163X maintains this level consistently.

For recording purposes, the rear panel offers line-level inputs and outputs, enabling direct connections to mixers, consoles, direct boxes, and various synthesizers. In live settings and studio overdubs, any musical instrument can be conveniently plugged into the front panel Hi-Z input, which features an adjustable trim to accommodate the full range of instrument and pickup levels without distortion.

Rugged and space-efficient, the dbx 163X can be stereo-strapped via a rear switch and ring/tip/sleeve connector. This feature is particularly valuable when compressing a stereo signal, as it does so without disrupting channel balance and imaging.

The dbx 163X excels in adding extra sustain and “fattening” the attack to smooth out a bass guitar. For kick drums that are too boomy and lack a sharp “slap,” compression can be added to tighten and define the sound. It also effectively smooths and balances vocal and instrument levels. By boosting the level and applying compression, individual tracks can be brought to the forefront of a mix. In live applications, the dbx 163X helps prevent PA overload, ensuring a clear and balanced sound.
