If ever a song deserved a place in the list of Classic Tracks, it is Kate Bush’s Wuthering Heights from 1977. Upon its release here in Australia at least, you could not turn on a radio or TV without hearing this song, an indication of just how huge a hit it was at that time. Her extraordinary vocal, and general song writing style stood out at that time, and even today still sounds like nobody else.
Recorded at Air Studios, the engineering talents of Jon Kelly and the fresh perspective of both him and Kate Bush, a newcomer to the music scene, combined to produce one of the most iconic recordings in music history.
The mixing of Wuthering Heights occurred at AIR’s Studio Three, utilising a state-of-the-art, custom-designed Neve console with the then groundbreaking NECAM moving-fader automation technology. The only two known effects used were both classic of their time and are still in use today, the UREI 1176 compressor and the EMT 140 plate reverb.
