Before embarking on a successful solo career, Icelandic singer Bjork was the lead singer and keyboard player for The Sugarcubes. Although the band didn’t reach the same level of success as Bjork did in her solo career, they did manage to make their mark with their hit song Hit and their album Stick Around For Joy which was released in February 1992.
One of the standout elements of the song Hit is the beautifully recorded snare drum which rings like a bell with just the right amount of reverb to add life and presence to it in the mix. This is largely thanks to the Sony DRE-2000 Digital Reverb, which was well-regarded for its ability to enhance the sound of snares.
In addition to the DRE-2000, the recording of Hit also utilised other studio staples of the time, including the legendary Lexicon 480L for room and smaller reverb duties, as well as a Yamaha Rev7 for the larger reverbs. These reverbs were crucial in giving the song its spacious and atmospheric sound.
While The Sugarcubes may have split shortly after the release of Stick Around For Joy, the success of Hit and the album as a whole served as a testament to the band’s unique sound and Bjork’s undeniable talent. The song remains a favorite among fans of the band and continues to be praised for its excellent production and use of reverb.
