AudioScape proudly presents the AudioScape MK-609 Precision Stereo Diode Limiter/Compressor. A modern evolution of the iconic “Metal Knob” 33609, the AudioScape MK-609 pays homage to one of the most revered bus compressors in audio history. The original Neve 33609 was itself inspired by the legendary 2254, a groundbreaking compressor designed in 1969 and integral to classic British consoles of the era. Both designs utilised a distinctive diode-bridge circuit topology, which relies on an internal sidechain for dynamic adjustments rather than processing the direct signal.
The AudioScape MK-609 retains the dual-channel design of its predecessors but incorporates several key updates, making it even more adaptable to modern studio needs. New features include:
- A high-pass filter on the sidechain, with selectable frequencies at 50 and 100 Hz, offering precise control over compression triggers
- An innovative “Super Fast” attack mode available on both the limiter and compressor, perfect for handling punchy sources like kick and snare
While the original design excelled at subtle stereo bus compression and smooth vocal processing, it was less effective on fast, percussive tracks. The AudioScape MK-609 addresses this limitation with its enhanced attack settings, providing ultimate control for both delicate and aggressive dynamics.
The AudioScape MK-609’s design allows it to tame large transients or subtly smooth peaks, all while preserving the harmonic richness that defined the original British units. Whether you’re looking to add depth and glue to a stereo bus, enhance lead vocals or acoustic guitars, or bring power and presence to drums, the AudioScape MK-609 delivers exceptional results.
With its blend of vintage tone and modern versatility, the AudioScape MK-609 doesn’t just process audio—it transforms it, adding unmistakable character and “deliciousness” to any track or mix.
AudioScape introduces the MK-609 Precision Diode Limiter/Compressor, inspired by the legendary 33609 and its predecessor, the 2254, both staples of iconic British consoles since 1969. With a diode-bridge topology, the AudioScape MK-609 manages dynamics using a sidechain for compression, offering everything from subtle stereo bus control to aggressive processing for drums and vocals.
The AudioScape MK-609 features two independent channels with discrete LIMIT and COMPRESS sections, each with their own Threshold, Recovery, and Ratio controls. A high-pass filter (50/100 Hz) has been added for sidechain precision, and the new “Super Fast” attack setting optimises it for handling fast transients, making it versatile for kick, snare, and other percussive sources. A reversible internal jumper now allows makeup gain to remain active even when the compressor is bypassed.
While staying true to the harmonic richness of the original British design, the MK-609 adds practical enhancements for contemporary workflows. Carefully curated modifications ensure purity of tone and respect for the classic circuit.
The AudioScape MK-609 incorporates rare vintage parts, like the U410 dual FET, crucial to the original “Metal Knob” design. Each unit uses carefully sourced components to deliver the authentic tone and performance that define this classic lineage.
