AudioScape MAP D.AM-27 Dual Channel Mic Preamp Details

AudioScape is excited to introduce the AudioScape MAP D.AM-27 dual-channel mic preamp, featuring our proprietary 1731 class A discrete op amp. This release marks the revival of Modular Audio Products (MAP), a groundbreaking early ’70s audio brand that emerged from the legacy of Melcor Industries. Melcor, a pioneer in class A discrete op amps for audio processing, created the 1731 op amp. After Melcor exited the audio industry in 1970, former engineers continued its legacy as MAP, with the 1731 at the core of their product line.

The AudioScape MAP D.AM-27 is a lush, sonically rich mic preamp inspired by the original Melcor AM-27 design. Its signature tone delivers harmonic sheen, a well-defined midrange, and punchy yet full-bodied sound, thanks to its transformer-balanced output and class A discrete circuit. Each channel features our in-house-manufactured MAP 1731 op amp, recreated with the same carbon composition resistors and transistors used in the original design, offering the authenticity of a new-old-stock AM-27 built 50 years ago.

Hand-built with boutique quality, the D.AM-27 combines vintage tone with contemporary craftsmanship at an unbeatable price. With the AudioScape MAP D.AM-27, AudioScape proudly reintroduces MAP products, reviving the classic mid-century sound for a new generation.

AudioScape proudly announces the relaunch of Modular Audio Products (MAP), a brand that emerged in the early 1970s after Melcor Industries, pioneers of class A discrete op amps, exited the audio business. MAP continued Melcor’s legacy, with the renowned 1731 class A discrete op amp at the heart of its products. These early op amps, now highly sought after, set the standard for audio processing. AudioScape is reviving MAP products to bring this iconic mid-century vibe into the modern era.

The AudioScape MAP D.AM-27 dual mic preamp is the first release in this relaunch, faithfully based on Melcor’s original AM-27. Each channel features AudioScape’s in-house manufactured MAP 1731 op amp, built with the same carbon composition resistors and transistors as the originals. The AudioScape MAP D.AM-27 recreates the unmistakable harmonic sheen and midrange richness of a new-old-stock AM-27 while being designed for reliability and longevity.

To suit modern workflows, the AudioScape MAP D.AM-27AudioScape MAP D.AM-27 includes essential updates such as phase invert, 48V phantom power, switchable high and low-pass filters, a -20 dB pad, mic and line-level inputs, a DI input, and input gain and output fader controls. A VU meter for input gain levels completes its functionality, making it versatile for everything from mic-level recordings to adding colour to the stereo bus or existing tracks.

The MAP 1731 op amp has been painstakingly recreated using all thru-hole components, carbon composition resistors, styroflex caps, and original 2n3707 transistors. For improved reliability and tone, silver-can output transistors have been integrated, providing better heat dissipation and superior sonic performance. This modern build retains the spirit and sound of the original while ensuring durability for years to come.

AudioScape’s revival of MAP is a tribute to the ambition and innovation of the original designs. Rare and highly regarded, MAP products set a standard that remains desirable for studios today. With years of admiration and expertise behind this relaunch, AudioScape is just getting started – there’s much more to come.
