AudioScape AS78 Dual Peak Limiter

The AudioScape AS78 is a dual-channel FET compressor/limiter inspired by the 1980 original. With stereo and A/B modes, ganged Attack and Release controls, and a Sidechain HPF, it delivers precise dynamic control while faithfully preserving the vintage design's character.

AudioScape AS78 Dual Peak Limiter Details

AudioScape is excited to present the AudioScape AS78 Dual Peak Limiter, inspired by the legendary original from the late 1970s, the UREI 1176. Known for its precision, unique sonic character, and reliable performance, this iconic tool has been a go-to secret weapon for engineers and producers for decades.

The AudioScape AS78 features two independent channels, each equipped with its own threshold and ratio controls, offering unmatched flexibility. Whether you’re taming peaks, adding punch, or shaping your audio’s overall dynamics, the AS78 delivers precision and versatility. Its dual-channel design allows you to switch between linked Stereo Mode and discrete A/B Mode. Additionally, the new Sidechain HPF, with switchable 80Hz or 120Hz settings, provides refined sidechain triggering for even more creative control.

With a distinct sonic signature defined by ultra-fast response, transparent compression, and a touch of harmonic warmth, the AudioScape AS78 combines power and nuance. Built to AudioScape’s exacting standards, it offers intuitive operation, exceptional build quality, and dynamic shaping that makes it an essential tool for any audio professional.

This is the revival of a legendary dual-channel powerhouse, first introduced in 1980 as the stereo version of the world’s most widely used compressor/limiter. Built on a dual FET-based topology, the AudioScape AS78 provides exceptional versatility and performance. In selectable Stereo Mode, input and output levels are individually adjustable per channel, while ganged Attack and Release controls manage both channels simultaneously. The loudest signal from either channel dictates gain reduction (GR) for both. In A/B Mode, the same ganged Attack and Release controls apply, but GR is determined independently by each channel’s dynamics, making the AudioScape AS78 a highly adaptable stereo or dual peak limiter.

AudioScape’s updated design incorporates a switchable Sidechain HPF (80Hz or 120Hz), offering precise sidechain triggering by filtering out low-frequency energy. This innovation ensures you can tame dynamics with surgical precision, crush transients without introducing unwanted artifacts, or subtly soften peaks transparently. Whether used on a stereo bus, background vocals, acoustic guitars, or drum stems, the AudioScape AS78 delivers depth, clarity, and unparalleled control, making it an indispensable addition to any studio.

This creation was driven by customer demand. Enthusiasts have long requested AudioScape’s take on this classic, and we delivered. Thanks to Manny Nieto, who generously provided his original unit, we were able to verify and faithfully recreate the core design. Our AudioScape AS78 matches the original’s behaviour, from its subtle nuances to extreme settings. With a careful approach to modifications, we enhanced flexibility without compromising the character of the original design.

Special thanks to Ryan Hewitt, who inspired key features like the blend control and sidechain HPF during his work on the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Unlimited Love. A huge shoutout also goes to David McDonald for designing the PCB and ensuring these updates became a reality. These thoughtful improvements make the AS78 not only a tribute to its predecessor but also a modern essential for professional audio work.
