The Akai DR8 is an 8-track digital hard disk recorder and editor, with a built-in digital mixer. Features CD quality audio, non-destructive editing, etc, but unlike computer-based systems, the Akai DR8 is as easy to use as an ordinary multi-track tape recorder.

Akai DR8 Hard Disk Recorder Details

The Akai DR8 hard disk recorder boasts top-notch capabilities for recording and playback, offering high-quality 16-bit linear 8-track simultaneous recording and playback. With its 1GB hard disk, it provides a generous recording time of up to 3 hours and 17 minutes (24.625 minutes x 8 tracks at a sampling frequency of 44.1 kHz).

For enhanced flexibility, the Akai DR8 offers options for expanding its storage capacity. You can either install an optional hard disk internally or utilise its SCSI port for connection to an external hard disk. For details on compatible hard disks, please refer to Akai dealers or sales outlets. The DR8HD model comes equipped with a 1GB internal hard disk as standard.

Another notable feature is the Akai DR8’s digital interface, which enables easy backup of recorded data from the hard disk to DAT.

In future upgrades, the Akai DR8 will support connection to an external MO (magneto-optical) disk drive for 4-track simultaneous recording and 8-channel simultaneous playback. Furthermore, you’ll have the ability to link up to seven DR8 units without requiring a synchroniser (additional AL-X50 remote cables are needed), allowing for a maximum of 56 tracks. This flexibility in expandability and upgradability empowers you to tailor the system to suit your specific requirements.

The Akai DR8 boasts a diverse range of robust editing functions, leveraging the advantages of tapeless and digital technology to the fullest. Unlike traditional digital tape MTR systems, it opens up new avenues for editing that were previously inaccessible. With the DR8, you can shatter limitations and unleash the music within you.

No longer constrained by fast-forward or rewind, its random access to recorded data empowers you to instantly edit or playback any sound from any track. Whether it’s copying, moving, inserting, or erasing phrases spanning multiple tracks, you can swiftly compile your finest musical moments.

The DR8’s TAKE function facilitates up to five trial recordings, each easily accessed through dedicated keys on the front panel (TAKE 1-5), enabling effortless selection of the optimal take. Rehearsals are simplified with the AUTO PUNCH IN/PUNCH OUT function, while the V ARISPEED function offers precise pitch adjustments, enhancing versatility.

All editing processes are executed through digital signal processing, ensuring no compromise to sound quality. With the UNDO function at your disposal, any missteps can be swiftly rectified with a single step backward. Mistakes become mere detours on the path to perfection, easily corrected with the assurance of a second chance.

16-channel mixer function.
The Akai DR8 features a versatile programmable mixer capable of blending 8 external channels seamlessly with 8 internal ones. In MIX mode, you have the flexibility to adjust and record various parameters including levels, panning, two FX sends, and buss ON/OFF settings, while also facilitating auto-mixing functionality.

Additionally, the Akai DR8 supports ping-pong recording, enabling simultaneous recording on 6 disk tracks and 8 external signals across 2 channels via the buss.

The Akai DR8 simplifies the process of searching for and pinpointing edit points with its JOG/SHUTTLE control, enhancing efficiency during playback. With 9 Direct Locate points and 100 Stack points, you can swiftly access specific edit points directly.

Basic MTR function keys are conveniently positioned on the upper half of the front panel, while editing functions and detailed controls are situated on the lower half, facilitating intuitive operation. This thoughtfully designed control layout of the DR8 promotes ease of use.

Advanced, high sound quality Components
The Akai DR8 incorporates Akai’s renowned digital technology alongside cutting-edge component design. Boasting a high-density 18-bit 64-times oversampling A/D converter and an advanced 1-bit dual 20-bit D/A converter, this unit delivers exceptional sound quality comparable to professional-grade equipment.

  • The DR8 has a word clock/video-sync terminal for digital synchronisation. Optional interface boards enable synchronisation with SMPTE time codes and MIDI sequencers.
  • An Alesis ADAT Digital Interface, a future option, will allow digital audio signals to be sent to and received from ADAT on 8-channels using a single cable.
  • An RS422 board and a Bi-phase board will be introduced in the future to allow the Akai DR8 to be integrated into film and video editing environments.
