The MOTU 2408 Mk3 marked a significant evolution in audio interface design, offering a powerful solution for both streamlined, computer-based studios and more complex setups built around digital mixers. For DAW-centric environments, its PCI-424 card introduced CueMix DSP, a zero-latency, processor-free mixing and monitoring system that replaced the need for outboard mixers or patch bays. Users could hook up synths, keyboards, and outboard effects directly, managing everything from the desktop with ease.
Designed with flexibility in mind, the MOTU 2408 Mk3 delivered 24 channels of digital I/O, supporting both ADAT lightpipe and Tascam TDIF protocols at up to 96kHz. This made it a perfect bridge between computers and digital consoles of any size. It also set itself apart by being the first interface in its class to offer built-in video and SMPTE timecode synchronisation, allowing sub-frame accurate sync without requiring an external synchroniser.
Cross-platform support was broad, covering Mac and Windows systems including 98SE, Me, 2000 and XP, with full compatibility across leading audio software thanks to WDM, ASIO, and Sound Manager drivers. For Mac users, MOTU included AudioDesk, a full-featured 24-bit DAW with 32-bit mixing and mastering tools.
As an upgrade to the award-winning 2408, the MOTU 2408 Mk3 added key enhancements like 96kHz operation, SMPTE sync, support for chaining up to four interfaces, and a 96-channel DSP mixer—all packed into a single rack unit, reinforcing MOTU’s position at the forefront of digital studio integration.
