AudioScape V-Comp+ Vari MU Compressor Details

The AudioScape V-Comp+ Deluxe 6386 Edition is a refined take on the iconic variable-gain, all-valve compressor from the 1950s, the Gates STA-Level. Originally built for broadcast, it became a favourite among engineers and producers for its effortless operation and musical compression.

Featuring a premium JJ6386 valve for gain reduction, expanded recovery time options, and a +5 dB input drive switch, the AudioScape V-Comp+ brings enhanced versatility to this classic design, making it perfect for today’s studios.

The AudioScape V-Comp+ delivers the same tone and topology as the standard V-Comp but with enhanced functionality. Based on the classic variable-mu tube compressor from the 1950s, it faithfully replicates the original circuit with Allen-Bradley carbon comp resistors, Cornell Dubilier polypropylene caps, carefully selected tubes, and proprietary hand-wound transformers to recreate the legendary sound of the original.

The AudioScape V-Comp+ employs a program-dependent compression ratio with a gentle knee, allowing for smooth and natural compression that adapts seamlessly to the source audio. It provides operators with intuitive control over attack and release times, maintaining its signature musicality across applications.

The enhanced input level control includes a DRIVE switch, adding +5 dB of gain after the input control. This allows users to drive the AudioScape V-Comp+ harder, fully saturating the transformers and tube stages while preserving headroom for output to converters, consoles, or tape machines.

For modern workflows, the AudioScape V-Comp+ introduces a fourth recovery time mode, OFF, which bypasses compression while retaining the warmth of the all-tube signal path and output transformers. Recovery times have also been adjusted to offer faster settings for modern pop and electronic productions. An exciting side effect of these tweaks, dubbed “glitch mode,” occurs when the unit is set to TRIPLE Mode with the fastest recovery and driven hard, revealing unique sonic possibilities.

Despite modern enhancements, the AudioScape V-Comp+ remains ideal for vintage-inspired sounds, indie productions, and retro workflows. It is hand-crafted in the USA, with every unit made in small batches with care and attention to detail. AudioScape also offers a 2-year warranty on all products.

Pairs now include a stereo link option, with a stereo link jack available for single units upon request.
