Ibanez HD1000 – The introduction of digital signal processing into audio has not only enhanced the performance of traditional signal processors but also enabled the creation of entirely new types of processors. Among these are pitch shifters and harmony generators, representing a new category. Digital technology now allows for real-time, high-quality, constant pitch shifts, whether raising or lowering the pitch. This innovative capability has opened up new possibilities in signal processing for studio, PA, and live music setups.

In musical contexts, constant-pitch shifts can be used to create melodic harmonies for vocal or instrumental lines, enrich sound with added harmonies, produce micro-shifts that more accurately mimic true doubling, and introduce a wide range of new effects. In PA applications, pitch shift devices are useful for creating harmonies, doubling tracks, and controlling feedback. In the studio, they are invaluable, and time compression becomes achievable when used with a variable-speed tape deck.

The Ibanez HD1000 Harmonics Delay, combining cutting-edge pitch shift technology with a fully functional digital delay, stands out as one of the most versatile processors in its price range. Its pitch shift section can alter a signal by up to 13 semitones (with an octave being 12 semitones). The delay section provides up to 126 milliseconds at 8kHz and up to 504 ms at 2kHz. It’s capable of producing a wide range of effects such as flanging, chorus, doubling, slapback, hard reverb, and discrete echo. This makes the Ibanez HD1000 an advanced processor for professional music use.

The pitch shift section allows for both pitch and fine-tuning adjustments with an accuracy of 10 cents (one-tenth of a half-step). The shifted signal can be mixed with the dry signal in any ratio, and the feedback path can be interrupted to create arpeggios using an external delay. The pitch can also be controlled externally through a computer or other device for dynamic, real-time pitch-shifting effects.

The delay section includes touch controls for delay time, delay multiplier, delay/shift selection, and bypass. The LFO uses a triangle waveform for smooth sweep effects. As with the pitch shift, the feedback path can be interrupted for additional signal processing, and the mix between dry and delayed signals can be adjusted continuously.

An LCD display shows either delay time or pitch shift, as well as indicating the optimal input level. Remarkably, all of this functionality is packed into a compact, one-rack unit (1¾” high), which is easy to operate.
