Tascam DA-50 Digital Audio Tape Recorder

The Tascam DA-50 Digital Audio Tape Recorder was the first US-legal DAT tape recorder with SCMS Copy protection, it was also a rebadged high-end TEAC or in Japan, Esoteric DAT recorder with some cosmetic changes to suit professional studio use.

Tascam DA-50 Digital Audio Tape Recorder Details

The Tascam DA-50 Digital Audio Tape Recorder was not only Tascam’s first DAT recorder.  it was also a pioneering advancement in professional DAT (Digital Audio Tape) technology by Tascam. With its cutting-edge features and superior performance, the DA-50 sets a new standard for audio recording and playback.

The Tascam DA-50 originated from the Teac R-1 DAT recorder, known as the Esoteric R-1 in Japan. Renowned for its exceptional build and sound quality, the Esoteric R-1 was crafted to meet the discerning standards of audiophiles. The Tascam variant of the Teac R-1 is essentially identical except for the branding and the absence of the 5mm thick front lid that conceals the controls; both versions feature transformers labelled ‘Esoteric’.

The Teac R-1 utilises Burr Brown PCM-77P for digital-to-analogue conversion and BB PCM-53JP-V for analogue-to-digital conversion. In contrast, the Tascam DA-50 employs BB PCM-64P for digital-to-analogue conversion and BB PCM-78P for analogue-to-digital conversion. While the analogue-to-digital boards are almost identical on both versions (aside from the converters), the digital-to-analogue board of the Teac version is more populated with post-conversion capacitors.

The Tascam DA-50 is equipped with 4 independent Zero Distortion (ZD) circuits for the L/R channels, ensuring pristine audio quality without any distortion. It incorporates advanced digital filters in both the A/D and D/A sections, along with dual 16-bit linear converters, guaranteeing exceptional sound clarity and accuracy.

Precision direct drive motors ensure reliable tape transport during recording and playback, while internal cabling made from Van den Hul Crystal-silver-coated cable enhances signal transmission and minimises interference. The comprehensive 7-way power supply system, featuring independent transformers for digital and analogue circuits, optimises power distribution and reduces noise.

Convenience is key with automatic tape loading functionality, controllable via remote, and a 25-segment peak level display with time-variable peak hold for accurate monitoring of audio levels.

Advanced functionality includes search functions like Cue/Review, Index Search, Blank Search, and Intro Scan, as well as the ability to write and read index codes from 0 to 99. Counter functions such as Index, Remaining Time, Absolute Time, and Program Time enhance usability and workflow efficiency.

A full-function remote control allows for seamless control over all recorder functions, while the rack-mountable design, with optional rack holders, facilitates integration into studio setups.

Connectivity options include balanced (L/R, XLR) and unbalanced (L/R, RCA) analogue inputs, along with digital inputs supporting Digital Audio Interface format via optical and coaxial connections. Analog outputs mirror the inputs for seamless signal routing.

The Tascam DA-50 supports various recording speeds and sampling frequencies, including 8.15 mm/sec. at 48 kHz, 44.1 kHz for playback, and 32 kHz for recording/playback via Digital In. Lens correction features ensure error-free data retrieval and playback, while the wide frequency response of 1 – 22000Hz ± 0.5dB (at 48 kHz) guarantees accurate reproduction of audio content.

Constructed with a sturdy chassis featuring partial walls and compartments, the Tascam DA-50 is designed to withstand rigorous professional use and protect against resonances and vibrations. Its compact dimensions and weight of 18kg provide stability and durability, while the sleek silver front panel adds a modern and professional aesthetic.

The Tascam DA-50 Digital Audio Tape Recorder combines state-of-the-art technology with intuitive functionality, making it the ideal choice for professional recording studios, broadcast facilities, and audio enthusiasts seeking uncompromising audio quality and performance.
