The dbx Model 224 model features two channels for encoding and two channels for decoding, allowing for simultaneous recording and off-tape monitoring of a stereo program. With the dbx Type II system, it delivers over 30 dB broadband tape noise reduction while simultaneously improving headroom in the tape-recording process by 10 dB.
Additionally, the unit can decode specially encoded dbx phonograph discs, available through leading hi-fi and record dealers. These discs boast up to 40 dB less noise than conventional ones, offering a significant enhancement in musical dynamic range.
It’s important to note that the dbx Model 224’s disc decoding circuitry is specifically designed for dbx encoded phonograph discs and does not reduce noise on traditional records. Similarly, its tape noise reduction circuits cannot address hiss on tapes recorded without dbx processing during the recording.
The dbx Model 224 is fully compatible with all other dbx Type II units, such as the 120 series and 140 series. However, it is not compatible with dbx Type I Professional equipment, and vice versa, due to minor signal processing differences.
When used independently, the dbx Model 224 significantly enhances the quality of live tape recordings and preserves that quality when copying previously recorded programs. Properly utilised, its tape noise reduction becomes a valuable addition to your sound system, enhancing your overall listening enjoyment.
With the dbx Model 224 being a model designed for domestic duties, it does not feature TRS or XLR connectors, instead it has standard RCA connectors, which does limit its use in the professional world.
