Roland SRV-330

Roland SRV-330 Dimensional Space Reverb

Taking what they had learned with the R-880, Roland developed a new SRV reverb, the Roland SRV-330 and it is one of Roland's finest digital reverbs. The Roland SRV-330 is a fantastic reverb that offers a broad range of reverbs, from real space emulations to retro gear emulations, and they all sound fantastic with smooth tails and low noise.

Roland SRV-330 Dimensional Space Reverb Details

The Roland SRV-330 is a high-quality studio effects unit designed to provide exceptional digital reverb effects with full stereo support for both inputs and outputs. Reverb options include stereo plates, various ambiences, wood rooms, small and large halls, and emulations of classic reverbs like the EMT 140 plate and EMT 251. It even features the iconic Phil Collins Gated Drum sound, conveniently named ‘Collins Drum’.

The effects produced by this unit can rival those of much more expensive devices found in professional studios. This is due to its use of 16-bit, 44.1 kHz digital processing, achieved through extensive efforts to redefine and develop all the essential features of a professional-quality reverb unit.

The Roland SRV-330 incorporates newly developed algorithms capable of delivering revolutionary effects, including a three-dimensional reverb with early reflections localised at multiple positions in space. These new effects are possible thanks to the expertise Roland gained through the development of its RSS (Roland Sound Space) system.

For every stereo algorithm, the internal processing of the left and right channels is done independently, ensuring that every detail of spatial localisation in the input signals is preserved after the effects have been applied.

The unit produces a high-density reverb that would typically only be expected from devices in a higher price range. It features many essential reverb algorithms borrowed from the Roland R-880, but they have been modified to be more user-friendly.

The effects can be altered in real-time during performances using pedals or MIDI messages to control specific parameters, making the Roland SRV-330 highly versatile.

The performance of the Roland SRV-330 is highlighted by its exceptional signal processing capabilities, including 16-bit AD and DA conversion with delta-sigma modulation and a sampling frequency of 44.1 kHz. It has an impressive frequency response range of 5 Hz to 70 kHz with minimal distortion, achieving a direct response of -3/+0.1 dB and an effect response of -3/+0.3 dB.

With a dynamic range of 100 dB or greater for direct signals and 90 dB or greater for effect signals, the unit ensures clear and precise audio output. It handles input and output levels flexibly, with selectable nominal levels of -20/+4 dBm, and maintains low total harmonic distortion at 0.012% for direct and 0.02% for effect outputs.

Input impedance is adaptable, offering 300 kΩ at -20 dBm and 10 kΩ at +4 dBm, while output impedance varies between 1.5 kΩ and 9 kΩ, reinforcing its capacity to deliver high-quality audio performance, making it a reliable choice for demanding audio processing tasks.

Features

  • Dedicated to superb effects. The Roland SRV-330 is a dedicated unit that provides no-compromise reverb sounds. A total of 22 reverb algorithms include brand new ones that were specially developed for use in the Roland SRV-330. Acoustic spaces as large as 512,000 cubic meters (equivalent to a cube with 80-meter sides) can be recreated. The unit’s effects are unmatched in terms of quality and variety by any other units in the same class.
  • Sync Reverb A stereo reverb algorithm that creates basic reverb types like Hall, Room and Plate, as well as extra-high-density reverb that adds chorus in the final stage. Internal signal processing for left and right channels is accomplished individually by the Roland SRV-330.
  • Mono Reverb This algorithm combines two separate reverb sections, for example Hall and Room, to recreate sound environments with complex reverb characteristics.
  • 3-D Reverbs Unique algorithms based on proprietary 3-D Spatial Simulator sound localization technology. For instance, the 3-D Ambience algorithm provides 40 early reflections that can be positioned at 20 locations for convincing high-density reverb effects. The 3-D Reverb algorithm adds dense rear reverberation to 20 early reflections positioned at ten locations. Based on these algorithms, 300 preset patches are available. Any of these presets can be edited as you wish and 100 customized patches can be stored to Roland SRV-330 memory for instant recall. A built-in 3-band parametric preEQ permits precise tonal shaping to match original sound texture and reverb type selected.
  • Roland Sound Space technology for unique 3-D reverb effects. Reverberation is made up of early reflections and rear reverberation. Early reflections are what reach you right after the original sound comes into contact with side walls and/or the ceiling. Such early reflections are distinguished by low density and clear directionality. Early reflections help you to assess a space’s size and acoustic character.

I have only just received this unit, but I have to say that this is a killer reverb. Smooth tails, lush sound but still warm. There are over 300 presets and 100 user memory slots so there is plenty of sounds and room for user settings. The unit is very well made and even after 22 years the switches feel solid, smooth and like new.
